Joshua and I went to a Farm in Alvin yesterday along with Kendra, Alena and Luke. We had a great time. Among other things I purchased green tomatoes. Today was a bit calm and uneventful at home. Just before supper i decided to fry the Green Tomatoes as an appetizer. They were delicious! As I fried them Will and Joshua ate them. So, by the time I finished frying them they were almost all gone. What more can make me happier than this- the men in my home appreciate my cooking.
I can not remember when was the last time I fried Green Tomatoes at home?
I had never heard of frying green tomatoes till I watched that movie called "Fried Green Tomatoes" with my friend Elizabeth Vendergrift in 1993 when I lived with her in her house in Wilmington, DE. The movie actually had a meaning or story to convey. But I was fascinated by the title. I learned that was a real dish eaten most commonly in the south.
Strangely enough I did not try making it till I moved to Columbus, Ohio in 1995. There my friend Matthew Wilson had a garden in their back yard. On one of the several visits I made to them his two little sons and I decided to pick vegetables for cooking. I was in charge of them and did not see that the little boys had picked green ( very green) tomatoes. Out of a great magnitude of guilt I decided to venture into frying them to save my self and the boys from getting in trouble with the gardener. So, I told my self pretend that they are Zucchinis and fry them like they do in Korea. Slice, dip in egg, and then dust seasoned flour- FRY. It worked! Matthew thought it was delicious. So, did I. But of course the boys would not eat it more than a small bite each. So there- my first Fried Green Tomatoes.
It becomes one of favorite things to eat. In June 1999 I went on to live in Louisville, KY because Will accepted a call to serve at the Presbyterian head quarters. There I found out that "Goose Creek Diner" serves "Fried Green Tomatoes" at lunch and dinner every day. So, I did not have to fry green tomatoes but eat it often. Fried chicken, fried green tomatoes and deadly cooked collard or turnip greens with iced tea make a perfectly tasty meal for me at Goose Creek Diner. Many great enjoyable conversations with dear friends were had there over such a meal there. One year we even had an Easter Sunday Branch with 14 friends there.
So, why am I writing all of this?
Well, FRIED GREEN TOMATOES brought me back many of the warm happy memories of friends from little boys of age 2 & 5 to very wise 90+ years old and all the ages in between. As I ate my share of the Fried green tomatoes this evening I am thankful to God for this southern dish called "Fried Green Tomatoes". I give thanks to God for using any thing, any where even "FRIED GREEN TOMATOES" to show me that He loves me. The fried green tomato in the movie has it's point/story. So does mine, read on the following to learn mine:
Psalm 86:8-13a
There is none like you among the
gods, O Lord,
nor are there any works like yours.
.....
For you are great and do wondrous
things;
you alone are God.
Teach me your way, O Lord,
that I may walk in your Truth;
give me an undivided heart to revere your name.
I give thanks to you, O Lord my
God, with my whole heart,
and I will glorify your name
forever.
For great is your steadfast love
toward me.
Life is a journey which we begin at birth. Each of us begin our journey in a particular place and time but we all travel on the road called life which is a gift from God. On this journey each day we learn something/s hopefully including some wisdom which brings us happiness, joy and peace.
